We are considering buying a condo in the Oakland neighborhood of Chicago. It seems nice but the stats on the area make me concerned about the safety. The condo is at 39th and S Drexel Blvd. Appreciate any guidance as we are buying from out of town. Need proximity to U Chicago Med school and Road Home Program rush hospital.

Bronzeville has got to be the most polarizing neighborhood (or community area, whatever) in Chicago. Lots of gorgeous, well-priced new and existing condos/SFH, but most of the commercial activity is lacking and run down.

I would advise visiting Chicago over a long weekend before making the investment. Maybe even airbnb nearby since everyone's threshold for crime/tensions is different.

As for that specific location, I believe that area is sandwiched in between the Black Stones and Black Disciples, but that mess is so disorganized that their boundaries are constantly fluid, and it isn't like you're in a war zone.

I think you are about 25-30 years behind in your estimation.

That area is experiencing the gentrification creep of Kenwood, a neighborhood of mansions and Barack Obama. There are many new townhouses dispersed among older residences -- none of them inexpensive. And the Bronzeville - Oakland area has more diversity of racial makeup than I knew or expected.

It would be best to check it out and ask folks about the area. 39th and Drexel is a cul de sac ending in a park frequented by early morning women doing race walking. Transportation is reasonable to the med school (the #4 will take one directly there and it runs frequently) but masks are still required. Rush is way on the west side so one could drive or take the bus downtown and transfer to the blue line subway.
