This is a bad take.

Are you nuts? Chicago has many distinct things.

1. The French Market
2. Garfield Park Conservatory
3. Safehouse Chicago (dedicated to the world of espionage)
4. Turtle Racing at Big Joe's
5. The El
6. Oz Park (in Lincoln Park)
7. The Brew and View
8. The Pedway (links 40 blocks of Chicago, connecting train stations, skyscraper sand stores. It’s a crucial transportation route for surviving a Chicago winter)
9. The Smart Museum of Art in Hyde Park
10. McCormick Bridge House Museum
11. The Neo-futurists (my dd has friends who perform here - longest running late-night show in Chicago, Too Much Light Makes the Baby Go Blind)
12. Noble-Seymour-Crippen House (oldest house in Chicago - has tours)
13. Chicago Photography Center
14. Devon Avenue - Little India
15. Osaka Japanese Garden (Reachable only by footbridges, this peaceful retreat features quiet pools, gardens, and a replica of Kyoto, Japan’s Phoenix temple.)
16. Northerly Island
17. Chicago Underground Comedy
18. Pilsen
19. Printers Row
20. Rockefeller Memorial Chapel
21. Graceland Cemetery
22. Pullman Historic District
23. Chicago Architecture River Cruise

and more

Chicago has many problems but that ain’t one. Have you been there? And I’m interested to know what’s so distinctive about Denver.

New Orleans and NYC certainly have a flavor, but Los Angeles? Seriously? I guess urban sprawl, plastic surgery, and flashy cars = flavor. Too each their own.

Beaches and surfing...

And regarding your other point, whether you like that flavor or not, LA has it in spades, and some people do.

Yes, I've been.

Look. Chicago is a very cool city, to me it's somewhere like a smaller NYC or a bigger Philadelphia. Very cool attractions for the party crowd. Multiple trendy neighborhoods and lots of bars and good food.

But there's just not much appeal for someone to move clear across the country to be there other than a job.

Not for Boston either.

Denver is near mountains and some of the best skiing in the world. And that is a big cultural and lifestyle draw. I know a number of people who moved clear across the country to be in Colorado.

But being near mountains doesn’t make Denver, the city, distinctive.

If you’re talking about having big draws for outsiders, well that much more subjective.

Does Chicago not have suburban sprawl out into the farmland? On the map it looks like some of those western suburbs are at least 50 miles from Downtown Chicago. I do believe that vast majority of people prefer to get around town in the privacy of their own vehicle rather than rely on public transportation.

You gotta remember, too, Chicago had about a hundred year head start on Houston and Dallas-Ft Worth.

No, Chicago does not sprawl out into the farmland. Chicago's train system is very good and many people use it to get into the city. Many of us prefer the Chicago transit system to driving.

https://www.transitchicago.com/facts/

The Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) operates the nation’s second largest public transportation system. On an average weekday, 1.6 million rides are taken on CTA. The CTA is a regional transit system that serves 35 suburbs, in addition to the City of Chicago, and provides 81 percent of the public transit trips in the six-county Chicago metropolitan area either with direct service or connecting service to Metra and Pace.

CTA has 1,864 buses that operate 129 routes and 1,536 route miles. Buses make about 19,237 trips a day and serve 10,768 bus stops.

On the rapid transit system, CTA’s 1,492 rail cars operate eight routes and 224.1 miles of track. CTA trains make about 2,318 trips each day and serve 145 stations.

Chicago is one of the few cities in the world that has rail service to two major airports. CTA’s Blue Line ‘L’ can take customers to O’Hare International Airport. Orange Line trains, which operate clockwise on the Loop ‘L’ structure, travel to Midway Airport.

CTA also provides around-the-clock service on certain routes. During late night and early morning hours, major rail lines and some of CTA’s bus routes offer “Night Owl” service, much of it with connecting schedules and routing.

And, btw, Joliet is only 35 miles from Chicago's downtown.

I can't think of one western suburb that is at 50 or more miles away from downtown Chicago.
