UChicago has long been one of the most small-L, classically liberal universities in the country. They accepted Jews long before the Ivy League schools, and burnished their reputation massively for doing so. UChicago used to be like Northwestern in that it was a private school playing Big 10 athletics, then they moved in a different direction during the 1930s and became very, very academically pure (if you want to call it that).

Northwestern on the other hand has always been more of a finishing school where you are trained to be a member of polite society. Big on the arts and business, it's never been as intellectual as UChicago. I see the DNA of the two schools reflected in this modern day ranking.

During what century/decade did this occur?

I'm having a devil of a time finding a source for this, but I had always heard this was the case from the 1930s to the 1950s. The University of Michigan functioned in the same way, admitting Jews from the northeast who were denied admission to Ivy League schools after the quotas were put in place in the early 1920s.

There is no big secret to this listing. It's not rocket science. The top schools on that list are mostly pubic universities, which face a much more stringent bar to formally barring any sort of student or faculty speech or outside speaker, because they are constrained by the First Amendment. The bottom of the list is dominated by private schools, which face no such constraints. So it's legal, though not always easy, to ban speakers, or censor students and faculty. Yes there are exceptions, but that's pretty much the way it plays out most of the time.

It will be interesting to see how the recent Yeshiva University controversy over an LGBTQ student club plays out. The school has declined to support ANY student clubs at all rather than be forced to support the LGBTQ club, which NY State says it must do because it is incorporated as a secular institution and thus subject to state human rights laws.

Lots of irony to be found. A Jewish person that is actually practicing the faith (not the typical liberal Reformed variety) follow the Torah (Old Testament called by some). It considers LGBTQ an "Abomination". and most certainly would not be permitted in the midst of a so called Jewish run organization. But these days the Reformed variety allow everything including those things banned by the faith, like a female rabbi and more. Oh well. The sign of the times. Throw the creators WORD right out the door.

depends on who has set up the criteria for what free speech is now allowed

when you have the government calling its own citizens terrrrorists who are expressing their rights

you know its going to make everything seem suspect when a University is cited for free speech props
