Adult couple living in the city looking to escape the city for a few nights right around or after the 4th of July. Was looking for any recommendations on a place to stay within a couple hour ride of the city. Doesn't have to necessarily have to be fancy, but looking for a place more suited for adults where maybe we could do a little bit of exploring while getting some much-needed relaxation in. Any recommendations are appreciated. Thank you.

Milwaukee is a good call, as is western Michigan. Although I imagine most of the places like Holland and Saugatuck are pretty booked at this point.

Spt4523,

I was thinking, you could set up your home base hotel either downtown or the immediate outlying suburbs. That way, you have quick access to the citylife, museums, or fests.

And then, if you want to take a little car ride, you could go north to visit the town of Cedarburg, or go west to the beautiful monastery, Holy Hill.

Well if anyone DOES come to the Milwaukee area, contact me. I'll share restaurant and other ideas.

As for me, I'm sure I'll be down this weekend to YOUR part of the map!

I'd consider going here, much like Galena; only closer.

How about Lake Geneva? You could stay at Geneva Inn or on the Fontana side as Fontana has fireworks starting around 8pm. Downtown Lake Geneva has plenty of bars and restaurants to explore as well. You can even take a chartered boat to view the fireworks from the lake.

Lake Geneva or Gurnee are always both great in the middle spots between Milwaukee and Chicago... Good call, ChiGuy

Thanks so much! I think we will actually be heading out of town after the 4th, but these look like great options.

Within a couple hours drive FOR RELAXATION from the hustle/bustle of Chicago I'd recommend the corner of SW Wisconsin, far NW Illinois (Galena), & just across the Mississippi to Dubuque IA.

Beautiful country there with some historical areas and sites to see.
