This might have been asked but with the ever changing construction, I need some current info. I'll be travelling east from Indiana on the I94 to Rockford. What is the best route to avoid construction and downtown Chicago? Any help thanks.

You could take I-294 around Chicago bypassing downtown. There may be construction on it as well.

You can avoid an awful lot of Chicago traffic by taking I-80 to I-39 and then taking it north to Rockford.

EDIT: Eh, never mind. That takes you too far south. Just take 294 to 90.

I vote for Skyway over 294. Fast, expensive, worth it.

There are MANY nasty spots on any route from Indiana to Rockford, though 294 is not experiencing any major construction this year south of the I-90 junction, but it is the "long way around" and the portion of 290 into the NW tollway from 294 has been backing up earlier and earlier, like 5:15 AM...
Skyway is more direct and faster, unless you MUST leave Indiana at time when the roads will be crowded the distance 294 adds is not going to save time...

The I-90 junction is having some work done and lanes are a bit constricted, but the real troubles are on the Edens, so anything to avoid being near that area when it is choked with commuters and Cub fans is highly encouraged.

The busy times on the Dan Ryan inbound (coming from Indiana/Skyway) are generally after 7AM. Unfortunately the Kennedy and NW tollroad clog up sooner, so you may want to plan to just arrive in Rockford early.

OTOH if you have to leave Indiana in the evening it is best to wait until after 6:30 -- 7PM as the roads on the IL side have been staying heavy until about then.

Despite the fuel prices there are tremendous volumes of trucks in the whole corridor...

Default Saturday travel

Sorry guys, I forgot to mention that i'll be heading through the area on a Saturday during around noon. Will that make it easier or is traffic sick all the time?

traffic should be easier on Saturday (294 and the NW tollway), but the Kennedy and anything downtown can experience traffic anytime.
