I was in Rome on Tuesday and it was 100. I returned to Chicago on Thursday and it was 100.

Chicago's 100 is way hotter than Rome's 100. 100 in Rome is tolerable and shade is hot but actually comfortable. Chicago at 100 is a blast furnace anywhere outside.

The media sensationalize weather events now more so than in the past and use melodramatic names for things. Polar vortex, bomb cyclone, heat dome, etc.
I remember that heat wave. It was terrible. They were putting bodies in trailers because there was no room in the morgue.

Here's another melodramatic name; derecho!

Many, if not most, Chicago buildings (especially residential and academic) lack any kind of central cooling. Additionally, Chicago has a lot of newer so-called two-pipe buildings that can only either cool or heat at any given time. We are later in the season, so that is not a concern as cooling systems have been running for a while. In older structures, most of the mini-duct and individual A/C units can only realistically guarantee 20 degrees of cooling. In short, the region's older housing stock and inferior HVAC infrastructure are a big reason that extreme weather events generate much-warranted media attention. It is without a doubt one of the country's cities that is most unprepared for a serious heatwave, as seen in 1995.

That means for a lot of older homes the A/c you get is from a window unit. Maybe it cools a bedroom but not the whole house. How well it cools is another question.

The 100 degree days are rare but do happen. Big reason to check up on your neighbors to be sure they are ok. Drink plenty of fluids.

At least its not Austin or Dallas Texas where its going to be 100 + degress for the next week. Excuse me while I sit on my deck and enjoy a nice cold beer.

A friend of mine who moved to Houston recently likes to send me pictures of himself sitting by the pool in January or February. To which I typically respond "sure, get back to me in August when it's a hundred and thirty-twelve degrees down there for the 17th day in a row and all the vinyl siding has melted off the southern face of your house."

I was in Italy, Greece and Egypt this summer and dealt with 95+ heat for weeks. It didn't feel any worse here for me.. and there's more places to cool off.. It was difficult to find restaurants in Italy and Greece that had air conditioning
