As I've been reading the different threads I've been hearing people say that certain areas go "dead" at night. Could anyone specifially tell me the neighborhoods/areas that never sleep and the ones that are only alive in the daytime?

This list is entirely North Side/Near West/Downtown-centric...

Never Sleep:

River North (parts of it)
Gold Coast (Rush and Division)
Wrigleyville (Clark Street)
Boystown (Halsted Street)
Much of Lincoln Park
Bucktown/Wicker Park (near the six corner)
Wicker Park/Ukranian Village (Division Street)
West Loop (Restaurant Row, Clubby areas)

Half Sleep:

Andersonville
Lincoln Square
The Loop (parts of it)

Dead at night:

The entire Bungalow Belt

Scary at night:

Uptown
Rogers Park

Is it possible to be more specific with regards to which parts of those neighborhoods never sleep?
Maybe indicating between exactly which streets all the action occurs.
I'm sure this would help a lot of people in deciding where to rent.

I would advise anyone moving to a new neighborhood to drive through a couple of different times, i.e, Thurs night and Saturday night. That will give you a good indication. Otherwise, just have a look at how many bars are on the block. That is why you see Clark/Division and Wrigley on the list.

I would also say that unlike NYC, much of the city "sleeps" at some point! It just may be much later in some neighborhoods than others!

Also, even in these neighborhoods, if you are off of the "main street" it's not going to be terribly noisy, if that is what you are worried about chopsky. Just stay off the main roads (such as Clark Street or Halstead in some of these neighborhoods) and you'll be close to the action but not too close. Also, just keep your eyes out for bars, etc, when you are looking at apartments.

Unfortunately I'm not worrying yet. Not sure when/if I'll be moving to Chicago. Applied to do a 2nd degree at SAIC and still waiting to hear back. I'm madly in love with the city though, which is why I love learning about it, even though I've never actually been!
Either way, I know I'll be visiting soon though (come hell or high water) and I hope it lives up to my expectations
If I do go to SAIC, I won't have much time to do research and find an apartment, so I'm trying to pre-emptively find out where I'd want to stay. If I believed in fate, I'd probably be tempting it right now, so good thing I don't.
If I did move to Chicago, I'd actually want to be in a very busy area, so yeh, I'm just trying to find out exactly where that is.

This may seem a little silly but I honestly feel safer in areas that don't go dead after say 10pm.

That makes perfect sense.. if there's still people walking around, then you don't have that element of someone creeping up on you on a lone street kind of thing.
