So here's the deal: I'm moving to Wicker Park, but I work in Lemont. I'm not willing to drive, and the public transit route is less than appealing for the day-to-day. A guy I work with lives in Hyde Park and takes the Stevenson home and I'm hoping if I split gas with him, he can drop me off on his way home in the afternoons at Damen, and I can catch the Damen bus home.

This is McKinley park yes? Which I believe is safe, but I wanted to make sure I'm not crazy in thinking this could work.

Anyone have a realistic estimate of how long that 5-mile trek north on Damen might take about 5:30 p.m.?

33rd and Damen is fine. Realistically, expect your 5-mile trek to take about 20 minutes.

20 minutes makes me the happiest girl on Earth.

My only other option home is bus to metra to el... with wait times that puts me well over 1.5 hours... I don't think I'd survive that long.

On second thought... probably closer to 30.

Bus to Metra to L to get from where to where, exactly?

Yes. I've caught the Damen bus north from the Orange line at 35th and Archer on several occasions.

Bus from my job leaves at 5:25 to Westmont metra station where I have to wait another 20 or so minutes for the metra, then take metra to Union Station and then either bus or el back to Wicker Park (My new place is on Winchester just off North) - that'd put me home well after 7 or even 7:30 most nights.

Very few things are fun in the dead of winter (except sledding home from work!) but I decided if I'm going to pay Chicago living expenses, I better at least live in the damn city and make some friends. It's been a pretty lonely and lousy first year out in DuPage

I completely agree. Once upon a time I rented a house that I owned to a nice young guy and his even younger companion in Clarendon Hills. I had to ask him if he really wanted a town THIS quiet at his age. Sadly he and the girl broke up. He kinda blamed the "lonely factor" as he worked and she was not ready to just sti home all day. It is not the fault of the town, but it can be the wrong kind of place for people at a certain stage of their life. BTW I made of ton of money selling that place for a teardown!
