King Drive is a long street and I have friends from 39th st. to 87th street. Where do you think it is so dangerous? More importantly, where do you get this info? I was on King Drive yesterday and rode from 23rd to 47th on my bike Friday night.

I'm pretty sure they tore down Robert Taylor. If you meant where the development was, that area is pretty much vacant, except for the new townhomes near 35th street. Is that where you meant? Where do you get your info?

You know, I don't want to take away from people's enjoyment of the constant crime-fest that is city-data, but keep this in perspective. In the vast majority of circumstances, you're probably at a higher risk of death by automobile accident while driving on Lake Shore Drive or one of the expressways than by a bullet while driving through a west side or south side neighborhood. (Unless you happen to be a gangbanger or drug-dealer of course.)

People would rather "look the other way" when it comes to controversial, politcally correct questions because they believe if you *act* like there are no bad people, no bad places, then there wont be.

Imagine that.

Last FBI stats showed black-on black crime was 94%

It showed that whites were 7times per capita as likely to be violently attacked by a black person as opposed to any other race

And of course you can get attacked by anyone of any race BUT I UNDERSTAND YOU ARE JUST playing the odds.
Which is what one should do.

I live here in the city and thats life in the city.

Its better to know than not know

So you are saying that those bullets "know who they are intended for" and there is no such thing as a stray bullet or that people are not attacked for being different than the prevailing race of people who mostly inhabit an area?

Crime wil only lessen if we state the real issues not the way we want it to be

Well, lemme see again. Most crime does not cross racial or ethnic lines. So, black on black crime is 94% of what exactly? And, on King Drive I've been in just about every block from 29th street to the south border, both visiting friends and as an entrepreneur. But I had on my 'cloak of invisibility' so that probably saved me. I did see some non-neighborhood people walking around near Garfield and King Drive on Sunday.

A lot of crime statistics happen to be meaningless. I hesitated to even comment on this thread because naming the 'worst' areas and 'worst' streets strikes me as a sort of genteel slumming. It seems fairly certain that few commentators on this thread have either been to King Drive or foresee going there in the future. So why comment on its crime status? It certainly is not to help anyone avoid dangerous areas, because they were not going.

I guess it helps folks to feel superior.

Hey jude, why don't you tell the whole story? White on White crime is at a 86% clip. from 1976-2005 according to the Bureau of Justice stats. So, Whites should be more fearful of the criminals that look like them. Interrracial crime is the exception, not the rule and while it still occurs, put the crime into proper perspective and in a common sense way. People should be fearful of the criminals that look like them an overwhelmingly majority of the time. Crime is also more likely to occur between people that know each other as well, regardless of race.

I don't know why so many people thought this was a pointless topic. Where I'm from, the neighborhoods are far more homogenized than it seems Chicago is (though we have a few very distinct areas) and we go more by streets. If you're in Cleveland and say, Lorain, Euclid, Carnegie, or eek, Kinston, you know that for the most part, you STAY AWAY! In fact, one of the only times someone is warned in Cleveland via neighborhood and not street is when one says EAST Cleveland, in which, you hang up the phone and go back to bed.

I'm new to the Chicago side of the forum though, so I often just silently read and try to get acclimated.

I am compiling research data (which I'll post) on a possible move next week. Hope to see you around!
