this will be my first time in chicago. i was hoping to see some bustling street life and some neighborhoods with tree lined streets, corner markets, flower stalls, and mom and pop stores. i will be staying downtown and was wondering if i would be able to use the train to get to these areas. so if you have any suggestions let me know. thanks.

Basically you're going recommendations of neighborhoods that are on the Northside of town. People act like the west and south sides of town having nothing to offer. Usually those are people that are not from Chicago. Natives know where to acutally go that the "tourists" don't.

Be ready to take tours of yuppie "suburban" areas in the city.

If those northside recommendations are what the OP is looking for, where's the problem? There are a few southside neighborhoods that have what he/she is looking for, but it is easier to get to the recommended neighborhoods from the downtown area (with the exceptions of Hyde Park, which is quite easy to get to from downtown using Metra, and maybe Beverly), which is where the OP is staying.

Who wants to try to explain to a complete stranger on a message board about how to navigate through the bad areas to get to those tree-lined, bustling streets on the southside? I don't want to take that responsibility. Be my guest.

I have to completely agree with you here even though most of the time I do not.

The Op asked a question and I gave my answer. If you don't like it, I'll let you deal with that.

Since when do I have to give similar answers as everyone else?

I agree- that's why I rarely post. It seems like if you don't agree with a few majors players on this site - then you get bitchslapped!!

Thats because this is their entire life. Talking to strangers on forums. Most of the posters on this forum (City Data) are old and "tired", this is their "excitement".
In real life most of the loud mouth know-it-alls on this forum are probably scared of their own damn shadow. The can be "bad asses" online.
