Dawes Elementary School <<<<Elementary

Bogan Computer Technical High School <<<<High School

You might consider going to one of these schools, Bogan was constantly hosting events/fairs for teachers last year.

Thank you so much for that info! I was at the May Teacher fair at Navy Pier, and I did not hear that. So that is good to know. I will be unable to make the June one, but hopefully I can go in July!

Thanks also (to the other respondent) for the weblinks to Dawes and Bogan.

To the other teachers looking...keep checking the CPS board for opportunities and then call the principals and BUG them! Also, register with the IASA board to receive posting notices from suburban schools. (I received calls from Wilmette and Glenview for interviews.)

There are jobs available...I BELIEVE IT...they just need to be sought after with perseverance! We do like Chicago more than Houston...

Well, getting back to Houston...

I live and have worked as a physics teacher in a Houston suburb near the Woodlands for a year now. Science and math teachers typically have very little problems finding a position in a good school district, especially if you have science composite (8-12).

But elementary teaching positions are extremely difficult to get. My wife has been looking at every district for months now. She has expanded her search to any school within an hour drive! Nothing! She goes on interviews to find out that as much as 12 other teachers are also interviewing and fighting for the job. She has 9 years of experience with great references.

Oh, and politics!!!! Are they every so much political favors in the elementary world. If you come to Houston and try to get an elementary job without knowing anyone, you may find a job in Aldine ISD or Houston ISD. (YUK!). Take one of those positions and you will be back knocking on doors begging for a position a year later (that's if you can survive!).

Sign up for one of CPS' new teacher hiring seminars. (I forget the official name) Get friendly with one of the girls who runs the seminar and ask her to take your resume. I did this and she pretty much turned into my personal headhunter. Within about a month, I got a job. She will send you anything, so be prepared to be flexible.

But, do you really want to work in Chicago Public Schools? My experience was atrocious. West side!

They are always looking for teachers in the city. They may not be in the best of neighborhoods and the pay wouldn't be as good as the suburbs, but it would be a job.

for teaching at the high school level if you are willing to coach a sport you are more likely to get a job. You probably know that though.

I know it annoys you when old threads get dug up, but I also don't think it's fair or makes sense to close every thread once the OP's ? is answered... plus it's not in the rules
