I'm looking at a job in Hoffman Estates. I'd like to have a half an hour commute and live in the Northern part of Chicago. Ideally, I'd like to live in Rogers Park, but the commute seems too long. It seemed to me from looking at mapquest that I'd have a half an hour commute from N. Ravenswood. Am I correct?

I'd be commuting (driving) during rush hour- and there's no public transportation to the job.

Thanks.

You are not, under the most ideal conditions possible, ever going to have a commute from Ravenswood to Hoffman Estates in half an hour. Not even at 3 in the morning. During rush hour, bet on 90 minutes, provided nothing goes wrong. If there's an accident on the expressway, make it 2 hours.

HA! A half an hour from Hoffman Estate to O'Hare would be a RECORD during anything other than off-peak times! Easily DOUBLE that to N. Ravenswood.
In bad times (that are still pretty common) the total commute to Hoffman Estates could easily approach two hours.

My sister lives in Lincoln Square, which borders Ravenswood. She always budgets about at least 30 minutes to drive to O'Hare. If there is any kind of traffic at all it can double the commute.

Is there anywhere in Chicago I could live that would have a half hour commute?

Thanks.

The closest thing you're going to get to a half-hour commute from Chicago is to live in the very far northwest corner of the city over by the airport. Your best bet is to find a place along the Kennedy expressway near Cumberland Avenue or Harlem Avenue. That will give you about a 30-40 minute commute to Hoffman (depending on which part of Hoffman you'll be working) while still having convenient public transit access to the city's nightlife spots via the CTA Blue Line train. But mind you the neighborhood itself will be painfully boring if you're looking for nightlife.

Edison Park has some action on Northwest Highway. Not like Wicker Park or something, but more than Jefferson Park or Norwood Park.
