Well, there's not a lot of demand in that area, which cuts two ways: One, rent is cheap, with one-bedrooms starting at about $600 or so, two-bedrooms starting at about $750; Two, since it's not a high-demand area, there's not a lot lot of rental stock so finding a place can be a little tricky. It's generally small owner-occupied single-story houses. Not a lot of multi-units or rental units down there.

Missy, look in Mont Clare. Metra can get you downtown in that time from there.

It's a Chicago neighborhood, take Grand Avenue out to the very edge of the city, and you're in Mont Clare. Oak Park Avenue is the center of the neighborhood. When I was growing up it was mostly Italian and Polish, these days I see a lot of signs in Spanish, plus there are black folks about here and there. That is different than the way it was. It's still safe by Chicago standards, and even if it is regarded as obscure and remote, you can get into the city quickly on the Metra line.

Blue Island has lots of houses for sale/rent right now...I'm sure many folks would consider renting to own. Most houses are older... there's a lot of bungalows, Cape Cods and ranches, although there's some newer developments as well. There's also a nice area of much older historic homes from the 1800's.

Great public transportation via Metra and Pace, 25 minutes to downtown, shops/restaurants within walking distance, decent schools, diverse.
