This has always been an issue for me in Chicago. I'm a bit clumsy white guy, and am pretty damn intimidated by the street ball that goes on at pretty much every basketball court in the city. "Pick up games" in Chi-town are not for the weak.

Also, most of the nicer neighborhoods have eliminated basketball hoops in the parks because they don't want young African-American residents coming to their neighborhoods. It sounds bad, but it's true. The neighborhood groups worked hard to get the hoops removed from Disney School near my home. Personally, I would have loved to go shoot hoops there from time to time, but the courts were dominated by young teenagers.

I live in Andersonville, on Clark and Argyle.

In fact, I just came from the courts in Foster Beach. I was just out jogging, enjoying the beautiful lake when I bumped into a pick-up game. Granted, my shot was shaky (Haven't played in weeks) and I was wearing running shoes, but basketball (Especially a GOOD pick-up game) is the one pure joy I have left so I enjoyed the hell out of it.

Wow, meant to say "big clumsy white guy".

There are courts at Senn High School that are pretty active. You could find a pick-up game there if you can hang with an urban streetball crowd.

Can you give me more information about the open gym at Northeastern?

I wonder if I, as a non-student, can get into the gym at Loyola or Northwestern as well??

The only places to really get a game where I guess it's..."safe", if you wanna call it that, is at an actual gym/health club type joint.

Looking back at this post, I'm wondering why Avengerfire called Loyola Park dangerous... The park itself is largely far from dangerous in the daylight hours, though the basketball courts are probably the most dangerous part of the park!
