Its amazing the amount of open space on the far SE side around the Calumet Harbor area.

Some of this is already forest preserve and state land: Eggers Woods, Beubien Woods, Burhnam Woods, and Powers Conservation area around Wolf Lake.

Check out the Google images street view to check it out, its hard to believe you are still in Chicago proper.

I know there are plans to set aside more of this area as parkland. Its mostly official wetland anyways with rare sp. such as Blandings turtle and Black crowned night heron.

Because of its industrial zoning and being seen as a less attractive area to live some of this area went undeveloped.

If you drive down there it reminds one of the hit scene from the Godfather that ends in "grab the cannoli".

It's a great place to check out on a summer weekend afternoon.
