By city standards, west ridge is very safe.

It's an OK neighborhood -- not great, not bad. It goes from "meh" to decent as you move from east to west. For me the biggest issue is access to public transportation. There are plenty of bus lines nearby, but it's a PITA to get to a train line, and the key to getting around the city semi-efficiently is convenient access to a train line. You don't really have that in West Ridge.

You can pick up a nice Chicago Bungalow or other small house in West Ridge for a good bargain considering the proximity to the Loop and the safety (relative) of the neighborhood. But as Drover mentioned, public transportation is not very convenient there. But I know people in West Ridge who commute on the Edens Expwy., and it works well for them.

If you can afford it, check out Sauganash and Edgebrook to the west. These neighborhoods are safer and nicer than West Ridge, and they have the benefit of Metra access.

^Most parts of Sauganash are just as close to a Metra station as (community area West Ridge) West Rogers Park is.^

There is no Metra stop in Sauganash.

The Milwaukee District-North Edgebrook station is pretty convenient for people in Sauganash. Some West Ridge residents could get the Union Pacific-North line at the Rogers Park station too I suppose, but that's really only a small fraction of the neighborhood since West Ridge is so big. Sauganash is much smaller that West Ridge, and Caldwell cuts a diagonal right towards the station from Peterson.

^So you are saying if one lives near Peterson and Rogers in Sauganash that is more convenient to the Metra than someone living near Touhy and Western in West Rogers Park to the Metra? ^

Yeah West Ridge/West Rogers Park is bigger than Sauganash. Most parts (about 3/4 of the total area) however are not any less convenient to the Metra than Sauganash though. Of course in terms of crime, quality of housing, schools, etc. Sauganash is way more preferable to West Rogers Park. That is not really debatable.

You could conceivably be five miles from the Metra in West Ridge, You're likely to be within a little over a mile in most of Sauganash.

Maybe if one lived in a van by the North Shore Channel or in the Home Depot near Lincoln and Devon...
