I will be moving to Chicago to attend UofC this fall. I'm not so keen on living in Hyde Park, but am concerned about the commute if I choose to live in another neighborhood. Are there relatively inexpensive neighborhoods that would provide a feasible (30ish minutes) commute to the Hyde Park area?

What is it about Hyde Park you're not keen on, and what are you looking for in a neighborhood that Hyde Park doesn't have? And "relatively inexpensive" is meaningless in a town where apartments rent anywhere from $500 to $10,000 a month. A target rental budget would be useful.

Also are you going to drive or commute via public transit?

I've lived in Hyde Park for a number of years and am now relocating north to the Logan Square/Humboldt Park area. With a car and a little bit of flexibility with the timing of your commute, you can get to Hyde Park in under 30 minutes from even as far north as lakeview or as far northwest as roscoe village or lincoln square. By public transit, your options are significantly more limited. Even getting to hyde park from downtown can take longer than 30 minutes, depending on where you are and anywhere northside-ish is impossible.

Like others noted, it would help if you mentioned what kind of neighborhood you're looking for.

I plan to live with roommate(s) and hope to pay around $600.

I will not have a car.

As far as particular neighborhood characteristics, I'm not too picky. I'd like to live somewhere with demographic diversity, some nice foliage, and not in the middle of a huge bar scene.

Thanks for your help!

Hmm, your criteria kinda suggest... Hyde Park.

I agree with Drover. There is nothing in your criteria to exclude Hyde Park, and without a car you would need some strong reasons to live elsewhere.
