I think that's partly because it is more known for it's graduate and professional degree programs than its undergraduate programs. While I've never met anyone in Chicago who hasn't heard of U of C, I've definitely met several who underestimate its national and global reputation. Interestingly, many of the same people overestimate the the national reputations of several other Chicago universities.

Funny, the people in the US probably heard of the other three from their March Madness office bracket pool.

It has a great undergrad program though! That is what I don't understand. Tied for 3rd best in the country... https://www.usnews.com/best-colleges...l-universities - Although maybe US News takes grad into account for these rankings?

Anyone who's not brain-dead has heard of the University of Chicago.

I would agree.

I just asked a room full of blue collar Iowans if they had ever heard of it, they looked at me like I was stupid for even asking.

I have to admit, I didn't know Chicago State University existed until I moved to Chicago, and even then I didn't know where it was until I accidentally drove by it once. I always knew about U of Chicago, though. How does anyone think those are related?

I think the generic name is an issue, as with the University of Pennsylvania ("oh, you mean Penn State?"). Maybe they should have named it Rockefeller University after the founder.

I think Washington University in St. Louis suffers from its generic name as well. I'd change it to Eliot University (the founder) or Danforth University (after a chancellor and big donor family).

Yes, they absolutely take that into account. It's right there in the paragraph at the top:

"offer a full range of undergraduate majors, plus master's and doctoral programs."

and

"These colleges also are committed to producing groundbreaking research."

Groundbreaking research in academia nearly always comes from graduate programs and their faculty.

This not to say that U of C doesn't also have great undergraduate programs (they do), but that is not what they have historically been most known for. In fact they have far more graduate and professional students (10,000) than undergraduate students (6,000), which is very rare even among top-ranked research universities.

Who confuses Ivy League Penn with state school Penn State? I find that even harder to believe than people in Chicago having not heard of U of C.

If that's what you call "suffering" I can't imagine how respected and sought-after they'd be if they weren't!
