Possibly the worst area of the north/northwest side for rapid transit. Miles from any Metra or L line. Cabs few and far between. It's a changing neighborhood that's marginally on the way down, but not particularly unsafe right now. The housing stock is decent and there aren't many large apartment buildings in the immediate area, so no real heavy duty trouble spots. Closest bars/restaurants of any repute would be a couple of miles to the north and east along Irving Park Road. Closest grocery store is A&G, about 6 blocks SE near Belmont & Central, and it's heralded as a great place by people who shop there. Other shopping is at Harlem Irving Plaza, a couple miles northwest, and the recently rebuilt Brickyard, couple of miles southwest.

So then is this a safe enough neighborhood to live in for a few months and ride the bus/train around town at day/night? Does this neighborhood have any names? Like Westside or Polish Town or anything cool like that? Thanks.

I would say it safe enough for a few months.

What Johnny Northside said was pretty dead on.

It is in the south end of Portage Park.

It's the very southwest edge of the Portage Park community area. There's no distinguishable name for that specific neighborhood. Daytime, the neighborhood is fine. At night, just need to be aware of what's going on around you, as you would almost anywhere in the Chicago area. It's a long bus ride to anywhere of interest at night, and the buses run less frequently at that time. It is just a one-bus ride to Wrigleyville, though. Probably 45 minutes one-way.

The neighborhood is called Portage Park around there as well as the community.

If you like Polish stuff you will not have to travel far to find these things.
There are many "Hispanics" that have and are moving in around there so that element is present also.

That area is Portage Park. Big Polish community. Question: Why there? I mean, there's nothing WRONG with Portage Park, but it seems a strange place to head to.

(But it looks like those posts above beat me to the punch)
