I'm in NW Indiana currently, and am in the midst of obtaining a new position downtown in the loop, and one thing that has been grating are organizations on job search sites that mention they're located in Chicago, they contact me, then I find out their office is somewhere in Naperville or Lake Forest or some crap like that, aka places I ain't exactly trying to commute. I know all the suburbs like to feel they're all one homogenous Chicagoland group, but uh,...let's not do that.

Default Agreed

I agree. I hate it when these companies pull the bait and switch like that. They know that single people with no kids (such as myself) do not want a job out in bumble-snot Illinois, so they try to get us psychologically invested in the company before breaking out the bad news.

I had an ex-colleague who interviewed with a company 4 times, 3 of them in person in River East. When the job offer came, only then did they say it was in the deep suburbs.

How difficult is it to ask up front where the job is located?

That's all fine and good, as I do that, but then they inform me that they're not really "in the city", but about 40 miles outside of it. Which is a hassle, frankly.

Suburban locations for offices are losing allure these days... The office vacancy rate is quite high in the suburbs right now, but in dowtown Chicago office space is in great demand. I hope the trend continues!

Thankfully I'm in a business where any respectable firm is located downtown or at least in a central city neighborhood near transportation...

Unfortunately, I'm in an industry where the "best" jobs (by my personal criteria) are in the burbs. Oh well, you do what you have to do. Thank God for Metra, ipods, and internet cards.

Hey, I am a big fan of Metra and all, but it hardly goes anywhere important in the suburbs. Metra stations are usually in sleepy little town centers with one or two-story buildings. Meanwhile, there is a 30-story skyscraper in Oakbrook Terrace that has no public transportation going to it. And do not even get me started on Schaumburg. This is why the "reverse commute" is so horrible.

I think another reason the recruiters are tight-lipped about the location is because they know how horrible the reverse commute is.

True. Metra was designed to funnel workers into the Loop. I think over time you'll see increased density develop around Metra stations. To a limited extent this is already happening. Oak Brook is a big mess, admittedly, poorly served by transit (intentionally so I'd imagine.) Regional planners are away of this and there's some talk about extending the Blue line to Oak Brook, although if and when it will actually happen is unknowable right now.

As I've stated repetitively to the point of sounding like a broken record, perhaps even more important than extending transit to the burbs is reconfiguring how we build the burbs so as to become more pedestrian and transit friendly. Reorienting the built-environment of suburbia will take decades, so you'll have to be a bit patient.
