OK, Chicagoans...time to chime in on a favorite subject for most of us...food

Give me your favorite local places for food on the cheap, and bonus for places that are open late. If you can list restaurant name/type of food/neighborhood, I'm all ears. I love great ethnic food, too...any great places you love in your neighborhood? I'm compiling a list, thanks!

Chicago has so many good places to eat I really do not know where to start. Popular late-night diners are Hollywood Grill and Clarke's, in Wicker Park and Lakeview, respectively. In Ravenswood, there is Chicago Pizza. They make a nice linguini with clam sauce, but the pizza itself is suspect.

White Palace - Roosevelt & Canal. Great breakfasts & burgers. (24/7)

Lorraine's Diner - Chicago & Damen. See above (Also 24/7)

The Wiener's Circle - Clark & Wrightwood. Good dogs/fast food, and open til 4 or 5am.

Nookie's Tree - Halsted & Buckingham. Good diner food. Open 24/7 on the weekends.

Superdawg - Milwaukee & Devon. A hot dog drive-in where you can order in your car & a carhop will bring your food to you on roller skates. Not open as late as the others. Can't miss the place because of the giant hot dog couple on the roof.

Good ethnic places (Not really open late, though. Sorry)

Red Apple (Czerwone Jablusko) Milwaukee near Belmont. (Also Milwaukee near Devon) All you can eat Polish for 10 bucks. Can't beat that.

Staropolska - Belmont west of Laramie. See above

Healthy Food - S. Halsted & 33rd. It's definitely NOT healthy, but yummy, hearty Lithuanian fare. Also, has a 50's dinner counter, and Lithuanian art all over the walls.

Frances Deli - Clark & Wrightwood. 50's style NY deli. Has a wonderully huge corned beef & pastrami sandwich. YUM.

"This American Life" profiled the Weiner Circle and that place is OUT OF CONTROL late at night. I know it's part of their shtick and it's supposed to be funny, but I couldn't help but cringe and be depressed when I watched the video of it.

^^

Yeah, my BIL had a pretty funny experience there in being cursed out for asking for the fries he ordered or something. Sounds like that's normal for this place, though. I think I have seen this place on TV...I don't think it was Food Network or anything..but I did see it somewhere!

Thanks for the head's up on Hopleaf on another thread earlier, BTW. Looks great.

Man--Red Apple sounds great. Looking forward to trying some of the great Polish food in Chicago.

I like the hotdog suggestions, too. I tried Portillo's and couldn't believe how great the Chicago dogs were...I'll have to try Superdawg and Gene and Jude's...sounds like Gold Coast Dogs is pretty good too.

I just thought of one more....I really should've had it in my 1st post since I live right by it.

Margie's - Western & Armitage. Not really a restaurant per se, but an ice cream shop. It's wonderful homemade ice cream, too! They also sell their own chocolates, too. They do have a small menu of sandwiches, but most people go for the ice cream or chocolates.

For cheap it is tough to beat Taste of Lebanon, 1509 w. Foster.

Right across the corner from Margie's is Lazo's and Arturo's - both great 24 hr. cheap Mexican places.
