I graduated from Northeastern in 2003 and when I first started school in 1999, there were a lot of black and Latino students which I expected because it is in the city and the neighborhood seemed quiet but my last couple of years there I noticed more and more thug-looking kids around campus and I heard a student in one of my classes tell a story about how a guy pulled a knife on her as she was walking to her car after class one night. To anyone who attends the school or lives in the neighborhood, how is the school and neighborhood now?

Basically no different than it was five years ago.

For some reason I never thought of North Park as a place where serious crime is happening. However, college campus = plenty of targets for thieves.

I drove down Kimball today from Wellington north to Peterson so went through Albany Park and close to Northeastern. Seems fine. The Brown Line ends there, so decent public transportation. I'd live in that area.

I do some volunteering at the Albany Park Community Center on Kimball near Foster, and the area seems safe & quiet.

You could get a knife pulled on you anywhere in the city. But that area is one of the safest parts of the city, and was in 2003 as well.

I still attend NEIU and it's not bad at all. Also there isn't a lot of black students at NEIU- they're only 12% of the school's population.

I've only been there a few times but it seemed like a quiet and safe area. almost kind of boring.

"thug-looking kids" meaning...kids with guns? or kids who watch mtv and subscribe to current fashion trends?

The area is fine, and so is the environment at the school. You do not have anything to worry about
