You can use google maps to do neighborhood walkthroughs. If google maps doesn't have it + it is in city limits, you shouldn't be goingthere!

I respectfully disagree, there are still a good number of major portions of whole neighborhoods that are very decent, and are NOT on street view. I blame this oversight on Google not getting around to filming all areas of cities, suburbs, etc. onto Street View yet.

Two good examples are that in both Portage Park and Gold Coast(the oversight is more noticeable in Gold Coast), there are decent portions of both that are YET to appear on Street View. However, I've found that Bing/MSN Maps has a very easy solution to wherever Google missed a portion of a neighborhood on SV: turning on the Bird's Eye view. It's a perspective that's inbetween an overhead/satellite view and a driver's seat perspective, but still gives you a very great idea of what an area is like.
