A gorgeous morning! Bright white snow on the ground, bright blue skies above. Makes for some blinding driving, so be careful.

35 below? close ones? haha, what was your living situation?!?!?! and 35 below is a gross exaggeration acting like that's "normal".

The city gets cold as hell, but only a few days a year is the average high actually below 32 degrees. This isn't siberia.

I wasn't really into the winter/christmas spirit until last night. Beautiful snowstorm, everything looks nicer today.

Although I'd probably want to kill myself if I drove last night. We had a department x-mas party at Dave & Busters last night. Despite warning everyone they did not want to drive because of the snow coming, a few did. They faced 3.5 hour drives just to get back to the O'Hare area.

35 below doesn't happen in Chicago. Ever. Sub-zero temperatures of any kind are pretty rare here, and typically only happen a couple-few times a year (and of course, I'm not counting B.S. "wind chill", which always sounds sensationalistic compared to reality).

There's 10 pages here, and I didn't go through them all. Move close to the lake and it's warmer in the winter. "Close" means...say, two or three miles? Five? The lake is 34 degrees; it's going to warm the shoreline, sometimes drastically, 10 or 15 degrees warmer than as many miles away.

One drawback: we get screwed in the spring. When it's 70 at O'Hare (official temps), which is 12 miles or so west of the lake, it's in the 50s. Sometimes in the summer, you walk towards the lake, maybe several blocks away, and it suddenly feels air conditioned in the space of two or three steps!

So, warmer three seasons, cooler one.

Well, within a few miles of the lake may help. If you're right BY the lake (say, a couple of blocks), that wind erases ANY benefit the lake's relative warmth may provide. The thermometer may say it's warmer, but that wind... oh that wind...

It's helping me, too. Since I didn't have to drive in it, I'm enjoying all of the fluffy white.

There are many days EVERY winter where the wind chill is well below 32 above zero.
