Last winter was terrible. We had an entire week where the temperature did not hit 10 degrees and during that week we had numerous -40 wind chill days. I dressed like an astronaut/terrorist with more layers than a government bureaucracy and went outside as little as possible.

The reason Chicago feels colder is because humidity makes cold feel colder and hot feel hotter. Lake Michigan is a humidity machine.

Add humidity to a nice sub-zero Canadian breeze and toss in uh... a little 16"snowfall and if the weather conditions are just right you could have yourself a full blown blizzard if the wind kicks up with or without a winter temperature Civil War soldiers called "cold enogh to freeze the balls on a Brass Monkey". If its a warm winter we'll be seeing ''naked ladies" (the annual) start to peek above ground by March and maybe a few hardy robins to go with it.

I don't know a state ont he Gulf Coast that never had winter snow. It's not as ofteb but it is just as cold and wet as Chi or NYC.

I would add Denver and Cheyenne, Wyo to the list that are not as cold as Chicago, though both have their share of cold weather.

That humidity stuff is not true in a comparison of Chicago and NY which as several rivers, Long Island Sound, etc. I don't quite get your last statement, either. I don't know where you're talking about that's as cold and wet as Chi or NYC. Certainly not most places south of either city.

He is right about the humidity, but I don't think it comes from the lake. Chicago was originally a giant swamp before it was developed.

Yes, I've lived in Illinois; I've also lived in Pittsburgh and Albany, NY. All three are damp cold.

Yes, it is very cold & snowy- but when the Spring comes-- it is the most beautiful thing you will ever experience when it comes to weather!!! You truly appreciate every single thing about spring!

As others have said, getting the right coat(s) are key. Some days, fashion is out the window, and you are just in survivor mode. Your coat might be ugly -- but when the wind is blowing and it is snowing-- you don't care!! It is not like that every day.

Buy alot of the dollar store gloves- because you will lose a few!!!

It's cold.
Not an issue for me though.

I'd rather have a couple days of cold then a a life of hot.

As an amateur meteorologist, I agree with Banx. The (relative) humidity does make the cold feel colder (and the hot hotter) but the majority actually comes from the gulf of Mexico. The lake effect on humidity is overall relatively minor.
