As a former city person, I realize that question is rather random and not something that most people would consider. However, there seems to be a growing trend across the nation to do this, if, for no other reason, to have fresh eggs...was wondering if this was catching on in the city, too...apparently, it is very popular in NYC with people having them on their fire escapes and stuff....

It is absolutely legal for eggs. There are restrictions on slaughtering chickens, but the restrictions are mostly health code violations, not related to keeping chickens at all. There was a proposed ban on it last year but it failed.

From what I've been able to find you are also allowed up to one goat or sheep. I've had a few chances to get a free goat but haven't been able to verify what the law is regarding goats, so I haven't taken advantage of that yet.

(For the OP)

If you want to have your chicken for dinner just take it to one of the places that have live poultry and have them do it for you. That way you avoid the mess, the work, and are legal(I think).

Oh wow this place has Pigeons too! Ick!

The goat idea sounds good. Nothing like being able to make your on Feta and
Chevrie without paying the unreal cost of the supermarket for those items!

I would advise that if you plan on having chicken or two (or even a goat) that you live in an area where people will not complain about them like a very ethnic neighborhood.

No, not vegetarians....my son just has decided to become an organic farmer. This is rather ironic since we have no farmers in our family at all. However, he lives in a rather upscale area (another irony considering he has the chickens...) and they are all about the whole organic thing. For Tom, my son, it is more of the challenge of creating a farm in the red clay that they call dirt here...and, a bit of an economic one as well. It is a lot cheaper to raise/grow your own food than buy it at the local organic store!

(He is also a web designer working for a major company so no real financial pitfalls there)

Really? Most cities ban roosters and only allow hens. I don't know about the Chicago law though. I just know that the city would really like to ban them.
