Live in the city, work in Wilmette?city/downtown experience that Chicago has to offer. I understand that the CTA Purple Line starts at Linden Ave. in Wilmette and goes south all the way to downtown Chicago. How long and stressful is the commute by train from Wilmette to the above mentioned neighborhoods? Is this setup something that you would recommend as a part of daily life, or is it too crazy?

Alright dude it depends on a couple things. First of all, where in Wilmette will you be working? If the answer is downtown Wilmette (by Green Bay Road & Lake Avenue roughly) you'd be a lot better off if you could use Metra to get to work. And the ideal north side neighborhood to live in that has Metra access would probably be the Ravenswood area (they have a Ravenswood stop). Another option could be living near the Clybourn stop closer to downtown. Once you jump on that northbound Metra, you can be in the heart of downtown Wilmette in lightning speed.
Sample travel times: Ravenswood Metra stop to Wilmette Metra stop = 16 minutes
Clybourn Metra stop to Wilmette Metra stop = 21 minutes
Taking the CTA from a stop in Lincoln Park/Lakeview? (ie. Fullerton, Diversey, Wellington, Belmont, etc.) Good luck, that line is going to be under construction and it is already slow as sh*t as it is. It could easily take you more than an hour, plus Linden is in east Wilmette, not in the town, which could be a bad thing as well (would need to transfer to a bus or cab if you work in downtown Wilmette).
