I don't know, I have heard the ghost of Al Capone still haunts some areas of Chicago. That should be your next worry: ghosts. Chicago is supposedly one of the most haunted cities in the country. Now that should make you truly paranoid. (And ghosts of mafia bosses, double the danger!)

On the other hand, Chicago is also famous for Michael Jordan, Obama, and Oprah. Going to school in downtown Chicago, you're likely to run into one, two, or all three of them on a daily basis.

Last time I was in the Loop I went to Starbucks and Michael Jordan was working behind the counter. I then walked down the street and sat down at a park. Right next to me was Obama, reading the paper. After chatting with him for a few minutes (I gave him some policy suggestions regarding mass transit funding), I hopped on the el and stood next to Oprah on the platform. Incidentally, Harry Caray, Mike Ditka, Kanye West, Bill Murray, Carl Sandburg, and a couple mobsters were waiting on the platform as well. This happens all the time.

i know there's a very big underground society in chicago, if you know what i mean. by underground society i am speaking of 'the invisible hand' that is usually referred to as, the mob or the mafia. now, for someone my age (18-30-will not be specific for security reasons) how aware should i be of who i mingle and interact with on and off campus? most of the people i know in chicago are good people e.g - nice families, middle/upper whatever you wanna call it - but am i still safe? how big of a threat is there to accidentally build a relationship with people that are not exactly 'what they seem' on the surface and might have 'other intentions' that you might not be aware of?
Sounds like you're attending that Chicago Italian University - a known breeding ground for some of the most notorious crime bosses. You sound very astute and would be of great use to our "Elliot Ness Underground Society." We are the invisible hand that protects college students like yourself from intense mob recruitment. Please join us. We are looking for undercover college agents. We would require you to sign up for courses such as "How To Get Made 102" and wear a wire. If interested, meet us tonight at the Northeast corner table at Rosebud restaurant. Wear a navy fedora and gold pinky ring.

Unfortunately, with our ceaseless mocking, the OP will probably never post on city-data again!

As others have noted - your fears are completely unfounded.

That said, there are some things to look out for in Chicago. Beware of alien abduction, Yeti (in winter), Sasquatch (summer), Chupacabras, and Land sharks. There's also this area called the Viagra Triangle where watches and compasses fail to work, many people have ventured there never to return......

And seventy year-old men in the area suddenly get 10 hour.....

Never mind, too gross!

I agree that this is a reasonable level of paranoia for someone new to Chicago.

I want to see more paranoia after you settle in.
