I don't hear it. Are you speaking of specific ethnic groups or races in Chicago?

Under what circumstances is the R sound "missing" in a Chicago accent? The Chicago/Great Lakes accent is one of the most rhotic in the English-speaking world. Pretty much nobody outdoes us on that front except maybe the Irish.

Irish "r" is light? Jeez, they have probably the most heavily stressed "r" sound in all of the English-speaking world.

This is where the nickname Macca came from.

Most known in the nickname for Paul McCartney.

How so? I always thought of the Chicago accent as rhotic, which is why I'm occasionally given a hard time when I go non-rhotic on people and refer to something being on the corner of 'Augustar and Damen' as opposed to 'Augusta and Damen', in non-rhotic accents, the linking 'r' is sometimes used between a word that ends with a vowel and begins with a vowel, which is why you heard Kennedy refer to 'Cubar' on occasion). Thankfully I don't do it all the time, but yeah, that is an example of the different between a rhotic and a non-rhotic, and it is definitely not part of the typical Chicago accent as I grew up hearing it.

wow..someone has given this a lot of thought!!

I know the Chicago accent when I hear it. I can't describe it, and maybe because I don't hear it everyday, but, if someone is from the city is talking within earshot; I immediately hone in on it.
