He fought wasteful spending more vigorously than anyone else in recent memory has.

You clearly are biased and have an agenda.

I think Fitzgerald was a mean-spirited dilettante of little accomplishment. If he stayed in the race, Obama may have beat him.

When Carol Moseley Braun was nominated to be an ambassador, two US senators voted against the selection: Jesse Helms and Fitzgerald. An interesting pairing.

Carol Moseley Braun was not even qualified to be a Senator. I seriously do not think she could not even run a gas station. Please.

She was a token. That is all she was.

It is funny you brought up her name. Talk about a Senator that did nothing (except for playing the race card and being corrupt)...

...and one that loved to play the race card:

"In 1998, after George Will wrote a column reviewing the allegations of corruption against her,[5] Moseley Braun responded to Will's comments, saying that "I think because he couldn't say n****r, he said corrupt."[6] (The word "corrupt" appeared nowhere in the column.) She also compared Will to a Ku Klux Klansman, saying "I mean this very sincerely from the bottom of my heart: He can take his hood and put it back on again, as far as I'm concerned."[7] Later, Moseley Braun apologized for her remarks.[6]"

Perhaps this might be a good reason to vote against her appointment as an ambassador? Don't you think?

Project much, Avengerfire?

Fitzgerald sat on his ass, and did nothing for Illinois. Manigault nailed him perfectly.

I bet you project Carol Moseley Braun into a great, legendary, role model Senator.

Avoid, avoid, avoid. That is all people that are FOS do when they are called out.

Actually, I don't. She was scandulous, I can admit that. You just don't like it when someone doesn't agree with you. Too bad you seem to think Fitzgerald was the great, legendary role model senator instead of the lazy ass he was. Whine, whine, whine, and call names. That's what people that are FOS do when someone doesn't say what they want.

Anyway, I'm done. Arguing with you is like arguing with a 5 year old child.

All I said was Mr. Fitzgerald did far more for Illinois than Mrs. Carol Braun.

I do not think Mr. Fitzgerald was legendary at all.

"His second major moment was following the September 11, 2001 attacks, when Congress quickly passed a massive bailout measure for most of the major airlines, which were in trouble financially. Standing alone out of all members of the U.S. Senate, Fitzgerald delivered a speech entitled "Who will bail out the American taxpayer," arguing that the airlines would simply go through the money and remain financially unstable.[2] The bill passed 99 to 1."

It seems he was the only one with brains at the time...
Reading about him it seems like he was a decent guy, a banker with a short stint with politics, who refuse to play along his own party machine, which we know now to be corrupt (Ryan?) It seems that corruption was his main concerns as he spent a lot of time to persuade everyone to bring an out of state prosecutor to Illinois. Turned out to be a very smart move as Patrick F. did not bow to corrupt politicians and the pressure he must have felt from all sides of the political machine.

Maybe Peter F. did not helpt to fund a major pork-barrel project but he definetely helped to fight the corruption in the state.

AAH, another fiscal conservative. Fitzgerald was also socially conservative, and was a co-sponsor of the Federal Marriage Amendment which would've effectively banned gay marriage nationwide. He also voted no on expanding hate crimes to include sexual orientation. I'm sure if a federal ban on abortion came up he would've voted yes on that.

So, Fitzgerald may have tried to save you a buck or two on your taxes, but as long he's also trying to deny people rights by legislating morality, he's not getting my vote, nor will I see him as a "great senator".

I might actually support you fiscal conservatives if you'd get out of bed with the Bible-thumpers.
