usually no, unless you pay the whole years rent upfront plus extra security deposit. but you can always go to the roommates section. its easier to become a roommate with someone who has an apt. If you really want an apt just for urself, and no roommates, its possible, if ur bro can cosign for you, provided that he has good credit and income

There are probably about 400,000 foreigners living in Chicago Proper alone, and more in the greater metropolitan area. Most of them seem to find housing without much of an issue. Depending on what country you are from, there's a good chance there will be organizations comprised of nationals from your home country who can help you get settled in and find an apartment and what-not.

yes, i really want an apartment for myself because my family & friends will come to visit and stay overnight quite often so i don't want that to become a problem with my roommate.. I read somewhere that I've got to have my own social security number to have electricity, water, gas, etc? Is it true? thanks!

Shouldnt' you be able to get a social security number issued to you if you're going to be living here temporarily?

I think you can get a social security number.

SSNs are issued when someone has a work permit.
Not for students, until they get a work permit.

If you have a work permit, you can apply for one.

See : Social Security Numbers For Noncitizens

Also, I think there are options for people who do not yet have security numbers. I would check the gas and electric websites (ComEd and People's Gas is most likely the companies you will be dealing with.)
I know a number of international students who do not have SSNs but have their own apartments, with their utilities in their name.
You shouldn't have much of a problem. =]
