I moved to Chicago in July 2007 and had rented a condo
with parking spot. I bought a condo and moved within the city
last summer with deeded parking spot. I have been driving around
town & suburbs with no city sticker...
until I heard about it from a friend today.

I am not sure what's the purpose of the sticker and whether
everyone needs it? I did switch to Illinois plate and driver's license
when I moved, but never heard of the city sticker until now.
Is it for vehicles parked on the streets? Our building doesn't
even apply for Residential Parking Permit Zone...

If I do need one (geez...), would I have to pay any fines for
not purchasing the sticker for the past year and half???
Please help!

The purpose is to raise revenue.

If your car is registered in Chicago and you have no sticker I would be very afraid of getting a ticket when parking on the streets if I were you. The city is really ramping up ticket writing.

There are other threads that have already answered your questions. Click "search this forum" and type in "city sticker."

Yes, you need one. Illinois allows municipalities to levy local Vehicle taxes: Chicago is not alone is this.. Go to a currency exchange.. they might not ask you when you purchased the car or moved to Chicago.. .. The most you'll pay extra is the late fee for this year ( 40.00 ??) .. If you choose to wait until June when next years go on sale, you do risk getting a ticket if you ever park on a city street or in some public garages, or if you are pulled over for a moving violation, or if you're towed by the city or its henchmen .

I was trying to get out of the sticker a while ago and I was doing good for quite some time. Well then my car got towed and they wouldnt even release my car until I bought a sticker and they tapped on a fine for not having one (I think it was 75 bucks). Moral of the story is youll get caught eventually, buy a sticker

If your car is registered in Chicago or if you have an IL driver's license and live in Chicago -- BUY AND DISPLAY THE STICKER. It just does not pay not to. Eventually the city will catch up to you and the consequences are quite expensive.

I say 'display' because the ticket is for 'failure to display'. Yes, I am one of the few people who possessed a city sticker but was convicted of failure to display it.

As dumb as the city sticker program is, it's best to just comply. The tickets are very expensive, and the Dept. of Revenue has no qualms about coming on to private property to ticket for this. I park in a private garage, but have seen the ticketers come in occasionally.

Pay for the sticker. You will have to pay more for this year since you haven't moved here within the last 30 days, but it's cheaper than numerous tickets.

Yeah, you've been pretty lucky to not get a ticket yet. Even with off-street parking, unless it's totally enclosed and/or out of sight, they'll still give you a ticket. And once they figure out that you don't have a sticker, they'll keep coming around and giving you a ticket every night you one until you get one, because at $120 a pop, those tickets easy revenue for the city.
