I am surprised though that some of the Chicagoans on this thread deny that this kind of Milwaukee bashing exists. We used to always got to Summerfest and The Safe House (loved that place - is it still around?) and tease people. Maybe my friends ARE rude. Or maybe it's because I lived on the Northside and North suburbs and it's more prevalent there. Again, it was all in fun.

We don't look down on Milwuakee. Just like we don't look down on Madison or Rockford or Springfield, or even Minneapolis and they have a football team! They just kind of run together for us. If there is something cool, we'll make the trip up. If there is not we won't. If I were to go though, I would definitely flatter my friend and tell them it is good. Not rip on his home.

In my experience the Milwaukee street gangs are worse. More ruthless and less scared of the police. But the Balistreri family mobsters in Milwaukee were pretty effectively dismantled, as far as I know.

Honestly, the "real" parts of Chicago that so many people tout on this board are pretty freakin' similar to Milwaukee. Take away the gentrified neighborhoods, the transplanted professionals from other states, the awesome downtown, the cultural institutions, and other "elite" parts of Chciago, and the part of Chicago that's left would basically be one big Milwaukee.

I like both cities, by the way.

You often hear a lot of old school Milwaukeeans and people from Racine always mention that we get our gangsters from Chicago. Just like in Madison they blame their spike in crime from people moving in from Milwaukee. I think this may be true to a small extent but not the main reason like some people would have you think.

ChiMack's talking about the actual gang affiliations, which have their roots in Chicago. GD and the Latin Kings are both pretty big in Milwaukee, and both were originally Chicago gangs that have "franchised" to other cities if you will...

Here's the thing about people from Chicago: the rest of the midwest is useless and means nothing to us. It's true, Wisconsin and Michigan are where we have cottages and go camping.
I don't mean this in a bad way per se, but when someone asks me about downstate IL, you may as well be asking about Iowa. I've been to Milwaukee I think twice?

These are the same Chicago people who always complain how condescending New York or LA is towards them. I have been around when my office got guests from Des Moines: I could not believe some small minded comments I heard that day.

I seriously doubt that Chicago has cornered the market on virtue or vice in this regard.
