As in the subject. Reading local newspapers and watching local TV one could come to a conclusion that Chicagoland is aboslutely uniterested in life outside of Chicago, Illinois and the US. Hardly any news from abroad.

Does this reflects local sentiments or is it the media thing and their poor judgement?

It's because you are reading LOCAL newspapers and LOCAL television. Therefore, the focus is LOCAL. The Tribune is one of maybe three or four daily newspapers that actually has news bureaus in other cities and countries, but it is making very unfortunate cutbacks right now. The quality has dramatically declined in the last five years. If you're trying to compare it to the New York Times, don't. The NYT is a unique newspaper in terms of scope and quality, and no other U.S. city has anything close to it.

Why do you constantly post threads complaining about Chicago? You need to find a new hobby or just leave town.

So your asking why local newspapers report on local news.... It wouldnt be much of a "local" paper if it didnt.

Most informed Chicagoans I know read the New York Times or foreign newspapers like the Guardian for national/international news. People buy the Tribune and Sun Times for local news.

Note that all of these newspapers are widely available throughout the Loop.

It's the local news and since this is a large city, there's much to report. When visiting a smaller city or town, I have observed that they repeat what has been covered on the national news simply because there isn't enough happening locally to fill the time slot.

Yeah, but... It seems strange that the media CHOSE to report on the trivia as opposed to showing any interest in international news. After it is your choice whether you report on Drew Peterson effectively making him a local celebrity or situation in Congo. Seems kind of strange considering Chicago's global aspirations, doesn't it?

There should be a difference between a local newspaper in a small town and in the big city, different magnitude of subjects yet both Chicago newspapers act like they are distibuted in a suburban mall. Even more true with the local TV stations... The Chicago news broadcasts are just plain boring.

PS. "Chicago bashing by newcomers"? What about this Chicago defensiveness? You can't ask a question or make a comment about Chicago without someone offering a free ride to O'Hare?

No, you've posted several posts now that are basically just whiny rants. It's troll behavior, and is very childish. You act as though you've never really experienced the rest of the country outside of metro New York, and sound pretty clueless.

I am acting like I am experiencing the third largest city in the US, supposedly a "global hub" and a "world city", aspiring to be in the same league as New York, London or Paris. Am I expecting too much?

If I was in Nebrasca some things would be natural and understandable. Chicago Tribune and Sun-Times on the other hand have a staff and resources to provide actuall news and not cover Drew Peterson story on the first few pages. This is very cheap journalism worthy of Inquirer and not media outlets in a 3M city... TV stations are not any better to be precise. What's wrong with them?

What's up with all this defensiveness, very mature I suppose?

There's been many threads about the Trib's decline the past few years on here.

There's not much you can do when a once great paper makes many decisions that run it into the ground. If you still buy it, you allow them to justify the changes. If, like many, you cancel your subscription, they take that to mean they should dumb it down further.

That's life. Now find something else to whine about, Veruca.
