My kids are/were in Bucktown, Wrigleyville and Lakeview (Southport Corridor) if any of these areas apply or you have specific questions, I can pass them along and see if they might be able to help. Have fun exploring your new neighborhood!

I know Yelp is good for bars/restaurants but what about other things??
Hi DJ. Welcome to Chicago

You should have a fairly easy time finding things on Yelp. It has basically everything you need within a 25 mile radius (which is probably a greater distance than you need covered!)

Also, ask around town. Don't be afraid to ask people at stores, neighbors, or co-workers. There's sure to be someone who knows something, and usually people have much better opinion than computers.

You are right about Google though. It doesn't help out at all. Good luck!

I still don't understand. I type in my address, then type in what I'm looking for. Why does it work for me and not for others?

Just search for your address in google maps and then "search maps" for the business type you are looking for. It works pretty well. And yeah, Yelp is good too.

Metromix can be good for bars and restaurants as well... Yelp will have dentist reviews, etc., but I find asking co-workers and friends works best for doctors and dentists.

I think Sukwoo is still a bit sharpened and Snarky because of the troll fight earlier today. He's not usually so mean.

Yelp isn't just for bars and restaurants, they do reviews of all sorts of goods and services.

You can use the Chicago Reader as well for certain things like restaurants.

both google and yahoo usually plot all the businesses on a map if you type in an address. if you haven't done this before then I understand your confusion.

as for sukwoo's sarcasm, I thought he was just being funny. But I guess sometimes it's not good to joke with people you don't know; not everyone takes it well if they are unsure of your intent.

Sorry if I caused offense, I only meant to snark. (If snarkiness is outlawed, only outlaws will snark!)

Anyway, I figured that anyone who has figured out city-data forums would be familiar with the basic location features of google maps. Its really an amazing and powerful piece of software. Google maps in Chicago also identifies bus routes, el stops, and metra stations. Using google streetviews you can survey the lay of the land, so to speak, without even walking or driving through a neighborhood. Good stuff.
