I know a lot of people harp on how bad the corruption and crime can be in Chicago but, seriously I miss all of that.
I moved to New Orleans in August, and granted I love this city but I will be moving back home when the economy is back to stable again.

Crime in Chicago is a JOKE compared to here, the mayor is a genius/saint and the police actually work to protect people.
The murder rate in New Orleans is so high that we're #3 in the world behind Cape town and Caracass. Do the math on that one.

There are many wonderful aspects about my life here like not having snow etc but seriously, the speed and functionality is something that I miss.

I was given a traffic ticket a few weeks ago and it's still not online or in their records. So, if I don't show up to court and waste a whole day of my time, I'll get hauled in by a nola cop and wind up in OPP, which makes Cook County seem like daycamp.

Scary, but true.

All and all, I miss the hell out of Chicago.

Better governance than NOLA is a pretty low bar to clear.

I do think people overlook how corrupt many, if not most, municipal governments are. Locally look at Cicero or Rosemont for examples of how to really do corruption right. Nationally look at Detroit, Houston (http://www.usdoj.gov/usao/txs/releases/January%202008/080125Surface%20et%20al.htm - broken link), Cleveland, Atlanta, New Orleans..... And don't forget Providence and Buddy Cianci - Even Blago can't hold a candle to that guy (Betty Loren Maltese got close).

Even looking statewide Illinois doesn't top any lists for most corruption, we're up there, but by no means the worst. I'm not saying Chicago doesn't have a lot of problems, but we aren't alone.

Default yes, and I'll even name names

Marion Barry, NY Gov Spitzer, chief of police NYC about 4 years ago, mayor of detroit obstruction of justice, Newsome Mayor of San Fran bones his friend and employee's wife. , Jerry Springer from Cinci, the list goes ON AND ON. I would alternatively ask you to name a big city, and then we'll tell you why it's corrupt. Daley and Blago are POWER BROKERS. IT IS THEIR WHOLE JOB. There is a value to everything and if you can't see it you will stay oppressed over and over again, generation after generation, and as always people like me will have no sympathy...

They should rename Caracas to Carcass.

Of course Chicago isn't as bad as you'd think.

We have a lifestyle that's unique to Chicago, and that's what makes us special. Although I may have started abusing crack to deal with the stress of the constant police raids, parking tickets, and the zombies, there's many unique things that make it all worth it.

The critical food shortages have really created a sense of community that was never here before. Like the other day, at 7am when the siren keening of the undead finally abated? My neighbor knocked to let me know that it was time to go foraging.

She knocked. I challenge you to find that kind of politeness in any other city.

And while foraging for food, water, and crack, we help each other in this city. We never go it alone. If I need a few saltine crackers to stave off the growling hunger pains that so agonizingly alert the hellish minions that prowl the night streets, I know I can ask anyone. Water? We can go to the lake together. Crack? We'll light up together, bro.

That's what you find here in Chicago: community, strength, resolve, crack.

And if this doesn't point out how ridiculous this thread is, well, I may need to actually buy crack.

Are you kidding me? Batman wouldn't survive Chicago bureaucracy for five minutes. Besides which, the batcar's got tints.

I just saw that Anthony Bourdain was talking about how Chicago has the best Soylent Green in the country, hands down.
