Also, I think we should probably stop referring to the vandals as "taggers". "Tagger" implies... I dunno... either gang connections or a sort of vaguely artistic sensibility. This, to me, seems like some 12 year old jag who is probably shocked and a little freaked out that this is getting such news coverage.
Yeah, taggers are actually worse because they display a pattern of this behavior. Intstead of kneecapping or forced January lake swimming, taggers should just be rounded up and sent to Gitmo. Or better yet, that prison in Iraq with the humiliating photographs.

Well, its actually nothing special by Oak Park standards. I wish I had a tile roof like a lot of my neighbors, but its just plain old black shingle. The gutters are actually a relatively recent touch, and haven't turned green yet. I think that has helped protect them from the roving eyes of scrappers. If the price of copper shoots up again, I'll be tempted to paint over them for camouflage.

Whoa, that's ugly. In this case the bronze is now better used as bushings.

Don't do it! If they're painted, you might as well just have galvanized metal.

I wish more Oak Parkers were comfortable with gates/walls along the public right of way. It's nice to have another threshold between public and private space. The Brits have been doing this in the suburbs for decades, and the result actually looks quite nice on a uniform block--and it provides another level of protection.

You know, I really wish they hadn't splashed this all over the news and given these mooks precisely the notoriety they were looking for.

One thing I will miss with reduced commodity prices are the stories about morons who fry themselves trying to steal copper from live transformers --Those stories were a riot.
