Ever heard of the quote "If you build it;they will come?"

A lot of it is HELEN SHILLER.

A woman who had moved into the neighborhood walked into the alderman's office last summer asking her about issues with homeless harassing people and her street getting trashed all the time and not cleaned up. Before she had a sentence out of her mouth the workers in the aldermans office told her "This isn't Lincoln Park sweetheart....why don't you just go back where you belong".

She was shocked. What kind of elected representative's office cuts someone off before they even speak and tells their own electors to just push off and leave? It's not like she was yelling, being racist or saying anything that wasn't obviously a true problem....

I was actually wondering about the number of social service agencies and live-in hotels in the area, not about gentrification. I am pretty sure a lot of those hotels have been around for decades, long before this schiller lady. Uptown has a reputation - way back from the days Al Capone hung out at dark bars in the area, etc.

Speaking of Uptown, where did all the Hillbilly's go? Were they absorbed into the local mainstream, their kids now in the burbs and whatnot?

There are a few left, but most have moved on. I'd bet that several of them made loads of money in real estate. I imagine there's 100 different stories there.

Not a place for a civilized person to raise kids. Still, if I were alone those guys wouldn't scare me personally at all. A bunch of wusses swinging sticks, throwing bottles, and running from each other. No one even took a swing as far as I can tell. I don't think they were really ready to fight, just fantasizing that they're tough.

For those who think the south side is a zoo -- I've never seen anything anywhere close to that in Hyde Park. And it it started to happen there would be 100 cops there in thirty seconds, and they wouldn't be so polite.

That's crazy, man. It's like an old school Jets and Sharks rumble. I wish the guy filming had a sniper rifle instead of a camera for these idiots. I live in Uptown, but that seems like a million miles away even though it's less than a mile.
