I live in the area that has been coined by some as East Humboldt park. I live west of western, east of California, and north of Division. The area seems to be coming around, but it is hard to tell from the stand point of a Air Force veteran used to small town Sumter SC.

While I do not consider it a bad area I do consider it is a bit rough around the edges. I am slightly defensive when telling family that it is "mostly safe". I have never had any problems, but after being in Iraq and Afghanistan I know to walk the walk and keep to myself.

Walking around my neighborhood I am slightly depressed. There is trash and animal waste everywhere. I was walking my dog the other evening and 3 "suspicous" inidviduals were walking my way. My dog stopped to do his thing and I picked it up with a plastic bag. I hear the remark "well at least you are picking it up of course black people and puerto ricans don't even own dogs". It was a backhanded complement, but I digress.

Are there any community activism groups that organize an adopt a highway type program to clean up the trash in nieghborhoods? It is my experience when you go into an area and take some pride and ownership that others will follow. A lead by example type.

Thanks.

While I agree that there is no East Humboldt Park neighborhood, I must say that "yuppies" moving into Humboldt Park is a good thing. Humboldt Park and many other West Side neighborhoods (as well as some near Northwest Side and far Northside neighborhoods) have been pure utter crap holes for like 40 years (and in some cases much longer.)

I'd check with your block club. Many block clubs organize "Clean n' Green" events every Spring. If you don't have a block club in your area, you might think about starting one with other residents who actually give a crap about their neighborhood.
