Hi, I will relocate to Chicago area this summer. My company is in south surburb some where near Homewood. It's right beside the Metra Electric Line Station. I am thinking of renting an apartment in Hyde Park and commute southward to my company everyday. My question is this: usually I will off work quite late (around 10:00 PM), is it safe to ride Metra Electric line through neighborhood south of Hyde Park? I heard Hyde Park itself is ok but areas around it are quite rough. So will this be safe?

Thanks

Should be fine. The creeps tend to take the CTA instead of Metra -- it's cheaper and goes to more places they're looking to go.

Thanks for replying! Is there anyway to check the statistics of crimes happened on Metra Lines?

What you really should be worried about is when the train runs, the Metra doesn't run that many trains after the evening rush hour and you might find yourself hanging around the train station a long time waiting for one.

Or you could familiarize yourself with the schedule and hang out in a nearby pub until it's time to amble over to the station.

That is never a bad idea. Beats hanging around the train station.

Thanks for your tips. I have figured out the schedule. At night there's one train each every hour. I will try to catch the 10:30 PM one and be back home before 11:30 PM.

By the way, are the trains usually on time?

metra is usually great, on time, safe. But I was faced once with the same decsion as you and would be more hesitant about that train. I always go north so I dont know about how sketchy it will be...but people have hinted to me its not the best idea (but I am also female...so maybe that is different). Anyway, I assume its just as on time and reliable as the north and west bound trains. (metra doesn't wait for people...you need to be on time!)

Metra Ellectric is quite safe. I have ridden this line since 1968. Currently, I ride the 9:20 pm from Randolph station to 103rd and 115th. Never had a problem. I'm a 65 yr old, AA male. Have there been some problems sure, but not daily. After all this is a big urban city. But, for the most part the ME line is quite safe, even the neighborhoods going south. So, make your move to Hyde Park, purchase a monthly ticket, sit back and enjoy. 4-17-2010

Wasn't it called the Rock Island when you first started taking the train downtown from 103rd?
