What are the ideal jobs in Chicago? What industry or popular businesses are great for Chicago? Like, I know a lot of jobs dealing with money and law are big in New York, and I know tech jobs are big in Seattle. What's the equivalent in Chicago?

Chicago has similar service-industry markets like New York: securities & commodities trading, finance, legal services, insurance, real estate investment/development, academic, consulting, etc, plus health care, tech, biotech, retail, light and heavy manufacturing, entertainment, tourism & hospitality -- basically everything that every other major international city has. The one thing we don't have that NYC does is a major concentration of mass media.

I get the impression that Chicago is somewhat known for consulting. Firms like McKinsey & Co, AT Kearney, Accenture/Arthur Andersen all started in Chicago.

Chicago has a very balanced economy and is not heavily invested in any one sector. Both in economy and in other areas, I like to say that Chicago isn't the best at anything, but is second best at everything.

Good point. I read somewhere (too lazy to look it up) that Chicago has one of the most balanced economies in the country.

Corruption. Build your career on political pay offs and you can't lose, as long as you have a winning head of hair!
