Just experienced my first crime in Chicago in three years and I am pissed off. Someone knocked the windows out of my luxury car on lincoln, in LP. Alarm must have gone off explosively because they ignored all kinds of goodies in arms reach inside my ride, including my laptop, money, spare shoes, and ran off like amateur-sour-feet, or else they were just vandals.

The thread's title made me expect some story about the evolution of an up and coming gangbanger. Like in a De Niro Movie.

Where you in the car at the time? If not, why was your laptop in the car.

Don't get me wrong, thieves suck and all and do not interpret this post as any sort of convoluted justification for their thievery (it is not), but my (former) car has been broken into for spare change and a cheap radio, I can't imagine leaving my laptop in my car if I wasn't it in too.

Yeah well about 3 weeks ago someone set the car that was next to mine on fire- guess what mine caught on fire too. By the way that was in Melrose Park- yesterday someone took my father's radio while his car was parked at McDonalds- By the way that was in Broadview. I didn't know people still steal radios- when you can buy one for less than $100.

Seriously, I'm not one to blame the victim, but don't leave anything in the car that you would miss. Someone might be walking past with no intention of breaking in, but then they see the laptop, and it's game on. I managed an apartment complex in a very nice part of Austin, TX, a very low crime city. And we still had 1-2 car break-ins a week. Crime can and will happen anywhere, you might as well not invite it on yourself.

That said, I'm sorry you got your car broken into. When I was 17 I had a very expensive stereo system stolen out of my car. That kind of thing really makes you feel violated, and down right pissed.

It's really not smart to leave anything of value in your car in Chicago. You shouldn't even leave a bag in your car if it's empty. Thieves will break into your car to see what's in the bag. And even if you're just running into a Starbucks for five minutes to get a cup of coffee to go, you should NEVER leave a laptop unattended! A friend of mine in San Francisco just had his laptop stolen from his car while getting a cup of coffee, so it's stupid to do this in ANY large city.

Anyone with half a brain would not leave valuables in a car in Chicago, yes even in Lincoln Park.
