How much is insurance for having a car in the city? Any guesstimates on this? I am considering buying a new car for now for my move to the city in a few years... but will not buy it if the costs of insurance to have it in the city are astronomical.

I would get something like a VW TDI Stationwagon or something similar... though probably not use it much.

Are some insurance companies putting a GPS or giving better rates for non frequent drivers? It would essentially just be a grocery getter on weekends, and a take dogs to the parker, occasional trips outside the city.

PS might sound stupid, but I haven't had a car in 5 years so... not sure what things are going for.

Personally I was fine before in the city not having one... but now that my gf is planning to move back with me, and we also have a dog now...could be a little different.

I wouldn't really get a car unless you are going to live in outlying areas of the city. Insurance is expensive. If you are a young male living in a Chicago zip code it might run you $150 or more a month for a VW. On top of that you have the uber-dedicated meter maids that ticket without discern. Plus you need the renew a yearly vehicle sticker.

If you must get a car I would buy a cheap used one that you won't mind parting with once the hassel of owning a car in the city becomes more trouble than it's worth.

I have a dog and when I need to go to the vet I either walk or call a cab. You might also be able to use I-Go and other car sharing services but I haven't checked into their pet policies. I've also heard that some people use vets that make house calls which might be the best possible option.

Good luck!

I have the same zip as you in Old Town but I am a 24 year old female. The rates for those under 25 or 26 years of age are higher. When I contacted State Farm I was quoted $118 for my 19 year old Volvo so I was factoring in gender and a newer car to make the insurance more expensive. I cannot imagine getting anything but the most basic of coverage for $50.

If you just need a car for grocery-getting or the odd errand or jaunt out to the suburbs, seriously consider looking into a car-sharing program like iGo or ZipCar. In fact you can now tie an iGo membership into your CTA pass -- one card for both. If the rates seem steep, also consider that said rates include the cost of fuel and insurance.

Niceeee... Yeah I have an Igo pass.
I guess I need to factor in, how much renting an occasional car to go out of town, or a trip to load up on groceries is going to cost. Didn't think the rates were that much, bout 8 an hour or something?

One time had an indiffernet experience when some MOD CUT parked in my igo spot and went in whole foods though or shopping somewhere... had to wait like 2 hours for them to get back and park it.

other than that, thought it was cool.

Can't remember this, but will they let dogs on the El?
