I heard of Pete's before. They have a few locations that I know of.
116th and Avenue O
87th and Racine (or close to it)
the new Halsted store and thats about it. It looks as if its some Mexican style store.

After I think about it, that Jewels on Halsted look pretty empty.

Thanks for letting me know. I don't shop over there often, but at least I know now

-About Pete's

There is a new Pete's opening in Calumet City later this summer everyone.
147th/Sibley Blvd. and Madison St. Also, a Buffalo Wild Wings is opening in Calumet City on 159th and River Oaks Dr. across from the mall. Hope it is successful!

Let's start with the facts, this thread is about Grocery Stores in poor neighborhoods, not FAST FOOD.

Fast Food has a lot to do with the lack of full service grocery stores. You don't need a deli or fresh produce for people that eat fast food and processed food (frozen pizza, etc) when they do "cook".

You do see Food 4 Less or Aldis (a few markets now have limited produce offerings). You won't see Kroger in these areas anytime soon (Kroger owns Food 4 Less). You also won't see Trader Joes (owned by Aldis brother).

Processed food, fast food are not healthy but they are cheap. Right or wrong, it is much more economical for a poor person to eat junk (we as taxpayers pay for their free healthcare).

Petes is Greek owned as is Cermak. El Guero is mexican. Cap_tos (love how it censors that word) and Tony's are Italian. These cater to many mexican neighborhoods.

Interesting how Supermercado Torres and La Chiquita are some of the few clean mexican owned grocery stores (owned by brothers). El Guerro and especially Carniceria Jimenez are filthy. Most of the cleaner mexican groceries are owned by the Greeks.

Getting back to the original topic, I don't think it is poverty so much as culture that leads to a lack of full service groceries in poor black areas. I known plenty of poor mexicans who do cook, which is why the produce section of local mexican groceries are comparable or better than what you find at Jewel or Dominicks. I think it is a culture of laziness that leads to eating only processed food and fast food. I also do not see as much cooking going on with 2nd generation mexicans.

Not fast enough. There's an abandoned Jewel not far from me at Belmont & Pulaski that's had a "COMING SOON: Pete's Fresh Market" since about the time you made this post. Last time I drove by a couple weeks ago, it looked like nothing had been done yet.

That sign has been there for over a year. I remember that I first saw that sign last March. It doesn't look like they've done a thing over there.

Surprising. From ground break to opening (late January) in Oak Lawn was very quick. The store is impressive.

I'm not sure if this applies to that lot, but I do know for a fact that one of the main reasons it took forever to get the Aldi's in at Belmont and Kimball was due to leasing conditions (a "restricted covenant," or something like that) that gave Dominick's power to forbid the property owner - the PROPERTY OWNER! - to lease the space to another grocery chain.

It sounds completely insane, but I heard this both from the alderman directly, and from a chamber of commerce member when I asked about it- apparently the leases are usually very long term, and even if a grocery store decides to shut down, they can have some power to keep another grocery store from moving in. There are buyout clauses for the property owner, which is what finally happened to allow the Aldi's in.
