My husband’s job is moving us to Chicago; I know nothing of the city. We are average working class couple with one small child (so schools are important) we only make roughly $80,000per year. What area’s (if any) of the city can we afford to live, buy a home and raise our child, without going broke? We prefer a more racially diverse area (a nice even mix of black and white) but we are also aware that beggars can’t be choosers. Please any areas and info on those areas would be great!!!

Where is the job? Chicago is huge, traffic is horrible, and public transit doesn't go everywhere. All things being equal, you want to be close to your job.

Also, 80k is significantly more than the median income in Chicagoland.

Let's see, they want racial diversity, affordability, convenience, and I assume safety. Probably could use a great school and responsive government with low taxes. I have it- "Movie Chicago"! That's the Midwestern version of "Movie New York", you know, where everyone lives in a penthouse and parks in front of their building. The reality will be, sad to say, a bit of a shock to them.

Why did you post that exact same post in the Philly forum at the same time you posted it here? Clearly you're not moving to both cities at the same time.

Are you doing some research study or something?

What else do you want to know beside the nation's highest sales tax, rising income taxes, corrupt political machine, crime, crazy fees to register your car, and park it?

$80k per year for a family of 3 isn't going to buy much around here. Without knowing the specific town the job is in we can't help much.

Have considered not re-locating?

A lot of the replys have good questions. Can you provide the name of the town where you or your husband will be working? If so, I can help. I have a relocation assistance experience. (not cost to you). you can reply to this post if you require further interest. I am also a realtor if you want to look for a place to stay or buy. (usually no cost to you either) The seller pays.
