Hello everyone. I'm very glad to have found this forum; I have a lot to learn...
I'll be moving to Chicago from NH in August to attend grad school at the School of the Art Institute; my girlfriend (also an artist) and our dog are coming along. I'm wondering which neighborhoods are popular with students at this school. Also, where is it possible to find live/work space at a reasonable price (raw lofts, etc.) without being in an overly dangerous part of town. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

-J

The main areas would be Wicker Park, Ukrainian Village, West Town, Logan Square, and Pilsen. Two areas that are also popular, but can have some bad sections, are Garfield Park and Humboldt Park.

thanks for the replies everyone. Those suites linked in the first thread are definitely not what I had in mind though... Pullman seems like an interesting neighborhood (albeit with a mixed reputation.) How long would it take to get to the loop from Pullman?

The metra electric stations at 115th and 111th st and will get you to millennium park station in give or take 30 minutes depending on the train you get on as each run will make different stops. No CTA train service to pullman and metra mainly only runs rush hour. So getting downtown without a car off hours will be a pain.

If interested give the Pullman visitor center a call or stop by when touring the area. They will let you know where and when an artist space may be opening up

Default where do the starving artists live?

I am moving from Pittsburgh to Chicago soon to live as a musician. I would like to live in an area that has a good percentage of young artists living there or a decent art scene. Also needs to be cheap, i just need a place to hook up my equipment and a place to sleep. I don't mind if the area is a little grimy.

I plan on moving out the end of May or beginning of June. I would prefer if I didnt have to sign a year long lease. perhaps subletting a 1 br apt near a college would work? I'm hearing some good things about Pilsen too...

x3 on Pilsen. Try to stay as East as possible, closer to Halsed the better.
