To the OP:
As a previous poster pointed out, it's so cheap because of the square foot. You can get a lot bigger apartment in other neighborhoods (Lincoln Park, Lakeview, WP/Bucktown, etc.) for the same price.

However, if you are dead set on the GC, and are wiling to give up space, I would give it a go.

I HIGHLY recommend you tour the apartment and think if you have enough room...and you can endure living in a place with so little space.

That seems awfully expensive for the space. 325 sq/ft isn't as bad as many think- my studio here in Joliet is the same size. Granted, I'm only here to sleep and eat every so often, but it houses me just fine. And thankfully, I only pay $499.

It's expensive because it's the Gold Coast and they can charge for it for the prestige of living in the Gold Coast.

Sure, but it's crazy to me. Awesome location, though. You'd only be a 10 min walk away from Fogo de Chao

Well for one there is barely any street parking around there and when there is it is metered. Two: the building is an old hotel. There is probably only one exit/entrance to each apartment.

I drove by there the other day. Three: Most of the windows have air conditioners in them. If the rent does not include electric you are going to have one hell of a bill April-October.

Four: It is quite possible the units do not have ovens or full size refrigerators in them.

Call and ask the management company about the questions I raised.

Be very wary of Reader apartment ads. Many are made to look like "Mom & Pop" outfits, but are actually placed by large real estate management companies. They get you to come in, fill out an application with more details about your life than your mother knows, then apologetically explain that the apartment in the ad is already rented but they have something "very nice" for "a little more".

Now the ad may be legit, but if you call them do so with your eyes open. And for God's sake, be sure you see the apartment first and READ THE LEASE CAREFULLY!!

Chicago used to be famous for cheap, no-hassle rentals. They still exist, but the real estate sharks are rapidly doing to Chicago what they did to San Francisco, New York, LA and every other once-cool city in America.

More than likely yes. But sometimes that will do.
