Hi everyone!

How is this in terms of safety? (single female comfortable with Chicago living alone). I know nothing about this area. Is this bucktown?

Thanks!

Wicker Park. It's right by the Jewel there (Jesse probably rides his $15,000 BMX BIKE! there). I'd have no problem with a female friend moving there.

The section of Milwaukee she's near isn't the most scenic (near most of the cheap/used furniture stores) so don't be expecting Damen in Bucktown, and its closer to Division/Ashland, which has its low income housing nearby. But if she encounters crime, most likely it would be of the vandalism/petty theft variety.

No problems there. This is technically Wicker Park, which is on-par with Bucktown -- just doesn't get talked about as much -- because it's bounded on all sides by other neighborhoods, so it can't grow.

I've had a garden apartment near there for four years and have never had a problem. There is a soup kitchen down the street at the kitchen, which attracts some interesting looking people, but none has ever caused a problem.

The location is fantastic. Right by Dean Park (hidden little gem), and walkable to everything on Division, Damen and North. Close to blue line, but it heads underground there so it's quieter.

Most of the neighbors are young families and urban professionals.

That area is nothing special. That Jewel was just remodeled. The K-mart attracts the low-income set. I once walked two dogs from Ogden & Milwaukee to the Oberweis Dairy and back and it was a lousy walk: past the low rise projects, tatoo parlors, vacant storefronts, the Division/Ashland intersection (aka scumsville), past the Ark thrift shop and the crappy stores to Oberweis. I'm with jidddy, it's not very scenic around there, but mostly safe. Too many weirdos walking around, so if I were a female, I'd be alert at all times. Luckily there are usually plenty of people around there so there's no isolation. There are two interesting and completely opposite book stores around there: one is Religious, the Occult Book ; the other is anti-religion/communist, Revolution Books.
