That wasn't a ranking, but just a tour. But the fact that Chicago, New York, and New Orleans are being mentioned along with Sri Lanka and the Ukraine is pretty embarassing. With Detroit, it's less shocking.

Hmm, it looks like we're doing better than Colombo and Kiev, at least. That means we can't be worse than 3rd.

the reason that new orleans pot holes are so awful is pretty unstoppable though. the city is sinking at an alarming rate so existing root systems from hundreds year old trees break through constantly. save for bulldozing the city and filling it in with 15ft of gravel before rebuilding there isn't really much else that can be done. that being said, the pot holes here are significantly worse than theirs.

I wouldn't call sinkholes the same thing as potholes. The article is misleading. Actually, I think Montreal takes the cake for worst potholes.

You cannot compare Chicago potholes to NYC's sinkholes. Thats like comparing Detroit's 8 mile to Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills. Sinkholes are formed from soil being washed away underneath the pavement and potholes just form from poor pavement conditions that crack and eventually after being beaten to death by thousands upon thousands of trucks and busses causes that roadway to begin to just crumble apart and hence a pothole is born.
