varies block by block, but not a place you want to go strolling late at night if you aren't familiar with the environs.

What are the less sketchy boarders over there? I am very used to Logan by the California el stop, but not sure about this it's about a mile west of there. Checked Crime blotters doesn't seem to be too bad....

generally not. but, if you live there, and you're white and aren't stupid, I'd wager you'd be OK most of the time. I have lots of friends in the area, and only one ever got jumped (returning, drunk, from a bar late at night), I've walked home at all hours from Wee gees and never had a problem.

that area is really more dangerous for un-affiliated hispanic and black kids who can be seen as gangbangers out of their hood. I had a good friend who grew up in Logan Sq who complained about constant harassment from his hispanic peers as he had no interest in joining their crew. That can be pretty serious stuff - you can be a convenient target for some young punk trying to show off and make an example out of someone, as they know there aren't any gang retaliation possibilities.

seriously, it's block to block. some blocks are stable, and on others they are chaotic - all it really takes is one or two homes where there aren't any authority figures (or when said figures are criminals) to make your block turn into Gang Central.

the good news is most gangbangers are lazier than s***, and don't do much outside of be a pain in the ass to immediate neighbors.

OK, that's not really GOOD news, but it is relevant, IMO, as plenty of people find great little streets in these kinds of neighborhoods, and are totally happy there. Wee Gee's is attracting some of the tougher of the hipster riffraff to the area (not as in kick your ass tough, but bike messenger tough), so it's not as dead as it used to be on the streets late at night.

I am looking actually a little more north, between st. louis and central park - Belden/Medill area. there are a few places over there I am looking at. They are very close to Fullerton and just a street or two past Kimball. I am used to Logan Sq. already as I said and love where I am at, just prices are high over at Milwaukee/California/Fullerton area. Would I be making a big mistake by buying over there? The area felt safe when I went.

I should add, I do have a son (he's only 9) but is going to a magnet school, so public school's are not a problem and I would never and never have let him play with local kids, although we are not Hispanic or black, so wouldn't want him picked on.

the closer you get to Wrightwood the better, but that area in general seems OK, I don't think it's really all that much different from where you are now. and I don't know if I'd shelter your son *too* much, if he's seen as snooty/too good for the locals that might make him more likely to be picked on, to be honest. he's gonna have to walk the streets and take the buses, trains, etc, at some point, you know?
